I SLEPT OVERNIGHT IN THIS AIRPORT "Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport evacuated amid bomb threat "- The Scotsman

I Took a trip to the Netherlands several years ago and upon return as I was about to board the plane for some reason they decided I looked suspicious and took me aside to search me and in so doing they caused me to miss my departure.
I realized later they did that intentionally because they were upset at me because of something that happened earlier at the ticket counter I guess they misperceived me as being an "Arrogant American".

Actually I was there because I have Dutch ancestry and I wanted to study my Heritage and my roots are in the Netherlands and when they saw my name "kok" which is a very common Dutch name. Nonetheless they caused me to miss my flight. they rebooked me on a different airlines and didn't even give me a hotel to stay at for the night so I ended up sleeping on chairs and even the floor for a little while.

I attended this Dutch-American festival recently in Long Beach, California (near bellflower's Dutch community) and was surprised to find several indonesian-dutch-american groups and individuals also celebrating their dutch-american heritage. I talked to a gal from the Indo Project about it and she informs me that a lot of her people speak or spoke Dutch just like our ancestors from the Netherlands. She was very nice and I felt a kinship with her based on this heritage as well.So let us remember our Indo-Dutch-American brothers & sisters as well when we celebrate our Dutch heritage.

WELCOME! This blog begins with a few photos from my trip there...and I will be adding information and links to it from time-to-time, including current news. I am an American but have Dutch ancestory which is very much remembered and celebrated in the Dutch-American community in which I grew up (west Michigan, Christian Reformed Church (CRC) & Reformed Church (RCA) et al). My late, great,  grandfather was a pastor and spoke Dutch & English from the pulpit and helped new Dutch immigrants settle in the area around Bellflower, California. When we were growing up, a common saying among us Dutch immigrants (most of us who didn't speak any Dutch) was "if you ain't Dutch, you ain't much"...ha ha...one of those ethnic things that keep people together for generation after generation. Albeit even in our Dutch-American community there were those who rejected the Dutch connection and others who glorified it to the maximum (wore the costumes during ethnic celebrations, had wooden shoes and/or windmill decorations around the home, etc). , and then those who were somewhere in the middle. I grew up mostly in Grand Rapids, but also spent significant time in the nearby city of Holland (Michigan) which is very much Dutch, and has an annual tulip parade which includes a Dutch festival at the Christian high school. There's also a historic wooden windmill in the little city of Holland which is on the coast of Lake Michigan. Stay tuned for more !
